Unfortunately people will get sick regardless of the amount of sterile precautions we are told to take. Sometimes it can be to our detriment to be too sterile.
I used to work in a school environment. There is always going to be the one who has no concern for the health of others(either the child or the parent who sends them to school sick), goes to work or school germy sick and sneezes everywhere, never washes their hands, always touching everything with germy residue on their hands and face.
It takes a sense of responsibility in all of us to be concerned enough to check yourself before giving it to someone else. That starts with you and the other's in that person's life who are teachers. Sounds to me like you do a pretty good job in that responsibility by not making them walk down a hall where all the other germy kids went to wash their hands. I cannot see where you can do better than that.

I too think that it is essential for the administrators, who over see the teachers/classroom environments, to have a background in Montessori. That is not the case where I work and it makes for lots of headaches and constant interruptions to th day. I also chuckle when I overhear her giving a tour....trying to explain the materials/what takes place in the classroom to a prospective parent. I think that they should take the entire training, but if thats not possible, then I think taking the Theory of Montessori is a MUST!!! They need to understand the why of what we are doing.

I personally use a mixture of both. There are some years where I get a large influx of 3 yr old (10 or so) and some years I only get a couple (2-3) and it really depends on how they do with carrying the trays with glass materials on it. If there tends to be a bunch of breakage then I use a greater mix of plastic into my practical life work, but if they seem to be doing very well- I leave things as is. I like the beauty that glass and ceramic provide versus plastic. Fortunately for me there are several wonderful thrift stores in the area from which I purchase 95% of my practical life material-that helps keep cost down when it seems like there are more objects being broken than not. Thanks for your blog....very interesting question you raised!

What was written about glass, wood and plastice was all relevant. Basically, garage sales, and restauarant supply stores make it affordable to have glass in the classroom. Our back closet was filled with extra supplies of glass bowls, pitchers, etc., of course there is always some metal and wood on the shelves which at home in a daily life experience. One thing we always do is put a runner rug right by the shelving for practical life. If it broke the sound was not as startling. Also, if we were working with a few children that were very uneasy with carrying, the assistant in the classroom was assigned to observe those few children and gently guide them to the table.

I liked your insight to the Montessori system. :D My mom did her student teaching years ago in a Montessori school, years and years ago. But it was interesting, and she was really intrigued by it.

I was there as well, possibly right in the same crowd. I shook hands with Mr. Vedder, who has basically been my idol for about twelve years running. I still can't get over it, it was surreal. I am very lucky and blessed to have had this experience, which I never thought would have ever happened. I hope that one day I will be lucky enough to talk to him, if only for a minute. I don't want to push my luck, but you never know..

The music of Pearl Jam and Eddie Vedder is the best there is.

I was there too! I shook hands with Mr. Vedder, it was fantastic - I am a huge fan. Wish I could have spoken with him, but oh well, it's all good.
